Dell Servers and Upgrading Your Old Perc to a Newer One

So, I had occasion to replace the PERC 6/I in my Dell PE T610 with a PERC H700 PCI. Swapped the cards, found the foreign arrays and imported them… Windows tried to boot and died with INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE … F-M-L …

So, I loaded up a USB installer and went to reinstall. Now the drive configuration was 4×500 in a RAID10 and 4x3TB in a RAID5 (FYI, the reason for the PERC upgrade wasn’t just the performance difference but also the PERC6 only sees those drives as 2TB and I’d like the extra 3TB for the array…) Well, it refused to install on the RAID10, states there is an issue. Quick research says to pop the additional drives leaving the boot one. So, I ripped out the 3TB drives, and then wiped the RAID10. Windows installed! Success! Reconnected the RAID5 and found I had a 6TB RAW partition… CRAP!!! … I did see the extra space though so that was nice…

After an hour of stressing and looking, found an article that reminded me about retagging … OOPS! … loaded up the PERC BIOS, removed the array, recreated WITHOUT INITIALIZING … BOOM! everything is back and the array was able to expand 3TB …

Long story short, if you are upgrading or changing your PERC, boot the PERC BIOS, import the array, WRITE DOWN THE DETAILS, remove the array, recreate it EXACTLY, DO NOT INITIALIZE.

My site has a lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission.
